Celebrating Women in the Workplace
This June, we’re shining a light on something truly inspiring: the strength, presence, and professionalism of women in the workplace — and celebrating their stories told through the power of a headshot. At Orange County Headshots, at least half of our clients are professional women, and time and again, we’re amazed by who they are and what they do in the workplace.
Through the lens
Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a woman who is quite literally at the top of her field — a captain for Alaska Airlines. Yes, the captain — she flies the plane. We held her session at our Laguna Hills studio, and afterward, she sent me a photo of a Boeing 737 Max engine to incorporate as her background. The final image was striking — a perfect blend of strength, precision, and pride. It was more than a headshot; it was a statement for women. She was celebrating the plane she flew.

That session got me thinking about how many incredible women I’ve photographed over the years: CEOs, attorneys, physicians, entrepreneurs, educators — leaders in every field imaginable. Their confidence and competence always come through in their portraits, and it’s a privilege to capture that.
Friendly advice
It also reminded me of a young woman I recently met, fresh out of college with a degree in photography. We’ve struck up a friendship, and I’ve been mentoring her a bit — sharing some of the insights I’ve learned from decades in this business. Like many creative careers, photography can seem glamorous from the outside. But in the true workplace, turning it into a full-time, sustainable profession is something else entirely.
It’s a bit like driving. Most adults know how to drive, but only a small percentage make a living doing it — whether as Uber drivers, delivery drivers, truckers, or even race car drivers. Photography is similar. With the rise of smartphones, everyone’s a photographer now — and while that’s great for accessibility, it’s also changed the way people perceive the craft. The mystique has faded. So how does someone stand out in such a crowded field?
For emerging photographers, especially women, the answer lies not just in technical skill but in developing business savvy, consistency, personal branding, and the ability to connect with clients. And being a woman in photography? It’s absolutely a strength. Some of the most successful photographers I know are women. They bring emotional intelligence, creativity, and a unique perspective — qualities that resonate deeply, especially in areas like child and family photography or weddings, where connection matters just as much as composition.
Celebrate
At Orange County Headshots, we’re proud supporting and celebrating women in the workplace— not only in the images we create but also in the stories behind them. Whether you’re piloting a 737, running a business, advocating in court, or building a photography career, there’s a place — and a powerful presence — for you.
